McCormick Road Utilities Tunnel

The University of Virginia is currently planning for renovations on three of their campus buildings. In order to accommodate these renovations the University had to switch the steam system the buildings were running on to a medium temperature hot water system (MTHW). The existing steam tunnel did not have suitable space to accommodate the addition of the new MTHW piping and, as a result, the University constructed a new utility tunnel. The 8’x8’ walk-through tunnel allows for future upgrades to these buildings.

Kenseal Construction Products supplied specialty materials and superior service to our valued customer, Central VA Waterproofing, for this unique project. The tunnel posed a handful of challenges. Due to time constraints, the project was placed on a twelve-week schedule. New tunnel sections were delivered in the afternoon, waterproofed on the street, inspected by an independent consultant and then installed in the tunnel during the night. With the many moving parts, it was crucial for our valued customer to have all of the waterproofing materials (including Henry’s Blueskin WP 200, Henry 573 Blueskin Primer, Henry’s Polybitume 570 Mastic and ITW STA’ PUT Quick Grip) delivered on time in order to keep the project running. The Henry sheet waterproofing was subject to a 6-week lead time during construction, which could have thrown the project drastically off schedule. However, Senior Account Manager Brian Greene’s experience in the market paired with Kenseal’s access to the industry’s leading products allowed the Kenseal team to keep up with the high demand for the waterproofing materials. In order to ensure consistent availability, Kenseal secured Henry Blueskin WP 200 prior to the start of the job and stored over 360 rolls in their Chantilly, Va. location. Kenseal then made multiple deliveries during construction enabling our customer to meet their time demands.

“Brian’s customer service is impeccable. He is wonderful, always does a great job and cares about us,” says Howard Pape, Owner of Central VA Waterproofing. “We have become great friends over the years.”

Kenseal makes it a top priority to truly understand our customer’s needs, help solve any challenges they may be facing and ensure their projects run smoothly and on schedule. Trust the Kenseal team with your next project!
