Hi Nick! Thank you for speaking with us! What is your role at Harris?

Pleasure! I am part of the Inside Sales team here in the Augusta, ME branch and I am also the front counter associate. In addition to my regular duties, I also put together all the Maine DOT pre-bids and I am the In-House ICF Specialist!

That’s quite the role, Nick! What lead you to a career with Harris?

I was unhappy with the situation at my previous employer and was looking to get back into sales. My father, who has over 30 years experience in the construction industry, recommended that I check into Harris and see if they were hiring, five years later and I`m still glad I chose A.H.Harris!

Describe Harris in three words.

Pride, Pride & Pride! The Harris Pride is a strong family that extends beyond normal “working” relationships and makes everyone feel like a welcome and valued part of the family. Also, all of the other employees I have interacted with all show pride in the everyday work they accomplish! I am personally proud to be employed by a company that has been in the industry over 100 years and is recognized by the construction industry as a whole for its integrity, determination, and long term business relationships and successes.

What is your biggest accomplishment at Harris so far?

My biggest accomplishment so far would have to be the Amtrak Maintenance Building Project that Consigli/ Riggs Construction built in Brunswick, NJ. I worked off and on for over 2 years with the estimating team at Consigli Constriction to get the Fox Blocks ICF’s approved for this project and to keep the quotes and estimates current while they negotiated the contracts and permits to perform the job. Overall we shipped not just 11 truck loads of ICF blocks to the job site, but also several truck loads of fabric & erosion control materials, almost a complete truck load of Harris Grout, as well as many other miscellaneous orders. This was a great opportunity not only for me but for the company as well!

What is something working at Harris has taught you?

I have learned many things in my 5 years at Harris, and one thing that stands out is the knowledge that I have obtained and all that I still have to learn!

So far, what has been your favorite memory at Harris?

My favorite memory so far was 2 months after I was with the company and I got to attend my first Harris summit! It was truly a great opportunity and a great way to connect with my fellow associates. Coach Marty Fine’s speech still resonates with me today.

What does Harris Pride mean to you?

Harris pride to me is about being part of a team that is always willing to do whatever it takes to service the customer’s needs. Harris looks out for every single employee no matter what their position, location, or how long they too have been part of the pride and that really means something to me.

What’s the greatest bit of advice a Harris employee has ever given you?

My first week at A.H.Harris, my Branch Manager Daryl Harvey told me: “We sell everything, if someone asks for something we don’t have, just tell them we don’t have it in stock but we can probably get it for them. I’ve sold everything from Crisco to Guard Shacks, we don’t just do sales, we do customer service. If you service the customer’s needs, the sales part will mostly be taken care of.”

Great advice! What is one important skill every person should have?

One important skill every person should have is empathy. Being able to relate to and understand someone, whether it is a big time customer with a product issue, a homeowner looking for a product recommendation or a co-worker that is having an off day, being able to relate to or see a situation from another perspective is an essential skill that is put into use every single day!

What is one of the things on your bucket list?

I would love to travel to Europe and especially Scotland & Ireland to see the old buildings, architecture and experience the culture in person.

Those are great aspirations, Nick! Anything else about you?

I have a beautiful wife, whom I’ve been married to for almost 10 years, and has blessed me with two wonderful children, Ava-Jo (8) and Brady (4). I enjoy many hobbies and activities; from Freemasonry, camping with my family to making homemade wine. My time away from work is almost always busy but it’s very seldom and never gets boring!

What a fun and adventurous life you have! Thank you for sharing with us, Nick! Let us know if any fellow Augusta, ME associates would like to be featured on our next ‘Meet the Team’ series!
