Let’s all welcome Josh Calkins in part 64 of our popular ‘Meet the Team’ series! Josh is a part of the Inside Sales Team in Syracuse, NY and has been with A.H.Harris for over 5 years. Josh is always looking for the next challenge to grow in his role at Harris! Let’s hear what he has to say about himself and his time here at A.H.Harris!
Thanks for your time Josh! What is your role at Harris?
Of course! Morning, I am a part of the Inside Sales Team in the Syracuse NY office. Thanks for having me.
What lead you to a career with Harris?
I was searching for some change, I had an interview with Joe Obey, Branch Manager of the Syracuse, NY office and then I got a job working in the A.H. Harris form yard/warehouse.
Describe Harris in three words:
Challenging. Competitive. Growing.
What is your biggest accomplishment at Harris so far?
I believe that growth is my biggest accomplishment. I started working in the warehouse when I was hired 5 years ago and I am currently on a path to expand my knowledge into a new role. I am looking forward to my continued growth here at Harris! It is such a great feeling knowing I'll be doing more for myself and for this company.
Congratulations on that accomplishment! What is something working at Harris has taught you?
There are too many to list! I knew nothing about construction material when I first started, but it`s always a learning process. I guess the most important thing I learned though is that we are a great team. Great teams accomplish great things and I think that is why we are such a successful company. We are a great team from the bottom to the top!
So far, what has been your favorite memory at Harris?
My favorite memory at Harris would have to be Harris University and the Summits. The times when we would get together outside of the office with our other branches, regions, and vendors are a great opportunity to network, learn, but also a really fun time.
Those are great events! What does Harris Pride mean to you?
Harris pride to me means that we have the best associates, the best customer service, and the greatest amount of product knowledge within our industry!
What’s the greatest bit of advice a Harris employee has ever given you?
The greatest bit of advice that a Harris employee has ever given me is to listen. I was told if you let the customer talk and just listen, sometimes they will end up answering their own questions. I didn’t believe this method at first, but it truly does work! I even end up answering my own questions sometimes!
I couldn’t agree more! What is one important skill every person should have?
Teamwork! I believe that there isn't any way we could all complete a single day at Harris without a group effort. In my opinion, every person should be able to work together as a team!
What is one of the things on your bucket list?
Something I have never done before and one of the things at the top of my bucket list is to go sky diving!
What an exciting idea! Thank you for allowing us to interview you and giving us some of your time, Josh!
