Meet the Team series part 23: Leadership Spotlight on Martin Hennig

Episode XXIII of our ‘Meet the Team’ leadership spotlights. Today, I got the opportunity to interview Martin Hennig. Martin is the E-Commerce Manager here at A.H. Harris and is responsible for many aspects of our online presence. On Facebook we run an album called “Faces & Places of AH Harris” and we also feature snapshots of our crew on Instagram. But we want to give some insights into who our company leaders are, what their background is and include some ‘personal touch’ that goes beyond what you would find on LinkedIn. Let’s hear it from Martin!

What is your role with the company, what are you responsible for here at AH Harris?

I am A.H. Harris’ E-Commerce Manager, responsible for many aspects of our online presence. I manage our social media channels (now with the help of a new team member!) and try to constantly improve ouronline presence and search results (SEO). I work with our developer on the look/feel/functionality of our website, oversee Google accounts, AdWords as well as a variety of web based directories, listings and maps (think Apple, Yelp, Foursquare, Bing Places, Google My Business, etc.). Besides that, I monitor and drive our web analytics and report my findings to our executive team. I like to have my hands in a lot of things, from process improvement to customer surveys, online marketing and our very own registered charity, The Harris Fund.

How long have you been with the organization?

I’m still relatively new, compared to most of my colleagues anyway. I started in late June of 2014. I was hired as project manager and my ecommerce background helped shape my current role. We’ve come a long way since then!

Congratulations on 1 year at Harris! Have you always worked in the construction sector or did you change industries during your career?

Other than working as a roofer a couple of summers when I was still in school, this is my first appearance in the construction industry. I came from eBay, Inc. where I worked for 8.5 years in different positions for PayPal in Ireland and StubHub here in Connecticut. Before eBay I worked in a couple of hotels back in Europe where I’m from. While the industry is pretty different, my job itself is not. I have long been involved with managing social media and online brand reputation. I am a heavy internet user and excited about the possibilities the world wide web has to offer to any kind of organization, including a construction supply leader like AH Harris. We have a long history – 99 years as I am writing this – but I am committed to help Harris succeed in the digital age, without jeopardizing our brand identity and traditions of course.

What does ‘Harris Pride’ mean to you?

I had no idea how serious this ‘Harris Pride’ thing is! People here are like family and incredibly loyal to the organization. We do not have much turnover, something I did not expect in this industry. Harris Pride to me is passion for our customers and care for our coworkers. It’s also genuine desire to support the construction sector and contractors near and far. Harris Pride is integrity, team work and so much more. I find it hard to describe, but you can feel it all around.

What is the one thing you want our customers to know?

You are in good hands! We listen & care. We understand we can only be successful if we make your life easier, your work more successful and productive. Our teams take great pride in finding and offering you the right solutions, based on our years of experience. We don’t want to be just another construction material supplier, we are determined to be your construction partner of choice for any current and upcoming projects, big and small.

Do you have a piece of advice for current or prospect employees?

Maybe a bit biased – but I recommend you take advantage of our online resources. We have a lot of information out there that will help you understand what we do and who we are. Both valuable for existing or new employees. We embrace social media and give a lot of insights into our teams, services and locations.
